EN 1891 Certified Ropes for Industrial Rope Access

EN 1891 Type A and Type B: Certification, Construction and Rope Access System Design
EN 1891 is the European standard governing low-extension kernmantle ropes used as primary and secondary working lines in industrial rope access. It defines minimum breaking load, elongation, sheath slippage and sheath-to-core ratio requirements that determine whether a rope is fit for use in a certified rope access system.
Within the standard, Type A and Type B designations reflect different sheath percentage requirements and elongation limits. Type A ropes carry a higher minimum sheath percentage and more stringent elongation limits and are the standard specification for primary working lines in IRATA-governed rope access. Type B ropes meet a lower sheath percentage requirement and are used as secondary or backup lines.
The English Braids Tutus Static provides Type A certification at 10.5mm, 11mm and 12mm, and Type B certification at 9mm, covering both working line designations within a single rope range. The 32-plait nylon (polyamide) cover construction maximises the sheath-to-core ratio, which directly affects abrasion resistance and service life at contact points on steel, concrete and abrasive edge protection. Batch-controlled manufacturing ensures every reel is traceable to a specific production batch, meeting IRATA inspection and retirement documentation requirements.
