Tutus Firex: Heat-Resistant EN 1891 Static Rope for Rope Access in High-Temperature Environments
Tutus Firex is an EN 1891 Type A certified kernmantle static rope manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire, combining a nylon (polyamide) core with a nylon and Technora® Aramid overbraid cover. The Technora® component of the overbraid cover has a melting point exceeding 500°C, which gives the cover an Excellent rating for heat resistance, substantially higher than a standard nylon-only cover construction. The nylon core delivers the structural and elongation performance required for EN 1891 Type A certification; the Technora® overbraid addresses the specific failure modes of high-heat and high-abrasion environments encountered in fire rescue, petrochemical rope access and offshore maintenance at height. The overbraid cover is also rated Excellent for abrasion resistance. Breaking load is 30.7kN. Weight is 8.6 kg/100m. Note: the Technora® content of the overbraid will degrade with prolonged exposure to direct sunlight; Tutus Firex is specified for work environments where UV exposure is secondary to heat and abrasion performance. Shrinkage under heat is 4%. Available in red (960) only, 11mm diameter on 200m reels.

Why Technora® Aramid Overbraid for Heat-Resistant Rope Access: Construction and Performance
Standard EN 1891 static ropes use a nylon (polyamide) core and a nylon overbraid cover. Nylon performs well across the general demands of rope access: it provides the elongation characteristics required by the standard, handles cleanly through descenders and backup devices, and has good abrasion resistance against concrete and steel. In environments where ambient temperature is significantly elevated, or where the rope is exposed to localised heat sources during descent or recovery, the thermal limitation of a nylon-only construction becomes the relevant factor. Nylon begins to lose strength progressively above its threshold temperature, and the cover is the first component to degrade at high-friction contact points. Tutus Firex addresses this by replacing the standard nylon overbraid with a nylon and Technora® Aramid blend cover. The Technora® Aramid component of this overbraid has a melting point exceeding 500°C, giving the cover an Excellent heat resistance rating against the nylon core’s Average. In practical terms, the Technora® overbraid maintains cover integrity at temperatures that would degrade a nylon-only cover, extending the rope’s safe working life in heat-exposed environments. The overbraid also achieves an Excellent abrasion resistance rating, which compounds the service life benefit in industrial environments where contact with steel structures, grating and abrasive edges is a routine condition. Tutus Firex for Fire Rescue, Petrochemical Rope Access and Offshore Maintenance
Tutus Firex is specified for rope access and rescue operations where heat is a primary environmental factor: fire rescue and fire service rope access, industrial rope access on petrochemical, refinery and process plant structures, offshore platform maintenance where flare proximity or high ambient temperatures are present, and onshore wind energy maintenance in high-temperature nacelle and tower environments. The red colourway provides immediate on-site identification to distinguish heat-rated lines from standard rope access equipment in multi-team deployments. Breaking load is 30.7kN at 11mm under EN 1891 Type A test conditions, consistent with standard rope access working load requirements. One working characteristic to plan for in system design is a 4% shrinkage figure under heat exposure: rope systems should account for this where precise working length is a factor. For environments where heat exposure is not a primary risk and a standard nylon kernmantle rope is the appropriate specification, English Braids’ Tutus Static provides full EN 1891 Type A and Type B coverage across a wider diameter range. For rescue applications see the rescue operations range. For the full English Braids nylon rope range see the nylon rope range.
