Tutus Acid Alert: EN 1891 Static Rope with Integrated Acid Exposure Colour Indicator
Tutus Acid Alert is an EN 1891 Type A certified nylon (polyamide) kernmantle static rope manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire. It shares the same 32-plait nylon cover and multi-core nylon construction as the Tutus Static and Tutus Hi Viz, with one critical addition: an integrated colour-change indicator woven into the cover that permanently changes from yellow to red when exposed to strong acids. A 20-second exposure to 10% Hydrochloric acid reduces a standard nylon rope’s retained breaking load to 77.6%. Tutus Acid Alert does not prevent this strength loss, but it makes the exposure event visible and permanent. The colour change is graded: strong red indicates severe acid exposure and immediate retirement; orange indicates moderate exposure requiring inspection and assessment; no colour change indicates negligible acid contact. The indicator is calibrated to acids that cause significant strength loss. Mildly acidic compounds such as 5% Acetic acid, which retain over 99% of breaking load after 20 seconds, produce no colour change, avoiding false retirement signals. Breaking load is 30.6kN at 10.5mm and 35.6kN at 11mm under EN 1891 Type A test conditions. Available in white and yellow fleck, 10.5mm and 11mm on 100m and 200m reels.

How the Tutus Acid Alert Colour Change Indicator Works: Acid Exposure, Strength Loss and Rope Retirement
Nylon (polyamide) is the standard core and cover material for EN 1891 certified static ropes. It provides the elongation characteristics, strength and hardware compatibility required by the standard, and performs well across most rope access environments. One environment where nylon’s limitations become a direct safety risk is where the rope is exposed to strong acid compounds, whether through chemical cleaning operations, surface preparation work, industrial process environments or chemical incident response. Acid contact degrades nylon fibres, reducing the rope’s structural integrity in ways that are not visible on the surface of a standard rope. A 20-second exposure to 10% Hydrochloric acid reduces retained breaking load to 77.6% of the original value. The rope may appear undamaged. Tutus Acid Alert addresses this inspection problem directly. The cover incorporates a reactive indicator that permanently changes colour on contact with strong acid compounds. The colour response is graded and calibrated to strength loss severity. The table image shows retained breaking load percentage and colour response for ten acid solutions after 20-second exposure. Strong red indicates severe strength loss requiring immediate retirement. Orange indicates moderate exposure requiring assessment. No colour change, as seen with weakly acidic compounds such as 5% Acetic acid, indicates negligible strength impact. The indicator is not triggered by all acids, only those causing meaningful strength loss, which prevents unnecessary rope retirement from minor or incidental contact. Specifying Tutus Acid Alert: Chemical Rope Access, Retirement Protocols and Related Products
Tutus Acid Alert is specified for rope access and fall safety applications where acid exposure is a foreseeable operational risk: chemical processing plant access, industrial cleaning and descaling operations, paint stripping and surface preparation at height, weld preparation environments and rescue operations involving chemical incidents. In these environments, Tutus Acid Alert provides a mechanism for rope retirement decisions that does not rely on visual inspection of surface damage alone. The colour change is permanent and cannot be reversed, providing an unambiguous retirement signal that can be documented as part of a rope inspection and traceability record. The construction is identical to the standard Tutus Static: 32-plait nylon cover, multi-core nylon construction, EN 1891 Type A certified at 10.5mm and 11mm. Where high-visibility identification is also required alongside standard rope access performance, English Braids manufactures the Tutus Hi Viz with integrated reflective tracer. For rescue operations involving chemical environments see the rescue operations range. For the full nylon rope range see the nylon rope range.
