Tutus Static: EN 1891 Certified Nylon Kernmantle Static Rope for Rope Access and Height Safety

Tutus Static is a kernmantle static rope manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire to BS EN 1891:1998. The rope is certified to EN 1891 Type A in 10.5mm, 11mm and 12mm diameters, and to EN 1891 Type B in 9mm. Construction is a 32-plait nylon (polyamide) cover over a nylon multi-core, with a sheath-to-core ratio of approximately 52 to 57% core by mass depending on diameter. The 32-plait nylon cover construction provides high abrasion resistance against steel, concrete and edge contact surfaces encountered in rope access and height safety work, and zero sheath slippage is achieved across the Type A diameters. Elongation at 50kg to 150kg load ranges from 2.00% at 12mm to 3.25% at 9mm. Static strength without terminations ranges from 26.7kN at 9mm to 45.0kN at 12mm. Impact force across all diameters is below 6kN, within EN 1891 requirements. Tutus Static is manufactured under a batch-controlled process with full traceability to batch, enabling compliance with WAHSA and IRATA six-monthly inspection cycles. The rope has been tested for compatibility with industry-standard descenders and backup devices. Available in white and blue fleck, black, red and blue fleck, and blue and white fleck across all diameters, in 50m, 100m and 200m reel lengths.

Typical Applications
  • Working rope and safety line in IRATA two-rope access systems
  • Industrial rope access on high-rise structures and facades
  • Building maintenance, facade inspection and window cleaning at height
  • Confined space entry and working line systems
  • Utilities and infrastructure access at height
  • Primary working line in personnel lowering and rescue systems
  • Arborist climbing lines for single rope technique (SRT) systems

EN 1891 Type A and Type B: Understanding the Certification Difference

EN 1891 is the European standard governing low-stretch kernmantle ropes for personal protective equipment against falls from a height. The standard defines two rope types with distinct performance requirements. Type A ropes must achieve a minimum static strength of 22kN without terminations, a maximum elongation of 10% under 150kg load, and an impact force below 6kN when tested with a specific mass and drop configuration. Type B ropes are subject to slightly different minimum strength and elongation requirements, making them appropriate for specific specialist applications rather than general rope access work. English Braids’ Tutus Static nylon rope is certified to Type A in 10.5mm, 11mm and 12mm, covering the standard specification for industrial rope access, utilities access, fall safety systems and rescue operations. The 9mm diameter is certified to Type B and is used in applications where its specific performance profile is the appropriate specification. The Type designation is a critical piece of information for procurement teams, site safety managers and IRATA-accredited rope access companies specifying equipment against their work at height risk assessments. All Tutus Static ropes are manufactured to BS EN 1891:1998 and are fully batch traceable, enabling compliant six-monthly inspection records in line with WAHSA and IRATA guidance. Tutus Static Construction: 32-Plait Nylon Cover, Sheath Ratio and Hardware Compatibility

The 32-plait nylon (polyamide) cover construction of Tutus Static provides a higher braid density than standard 16-plait or 24-plait rope access rope constructions, increasing abrasion resistance at contact points and reducing the rate of cover degradation when working against abrasive steel structures, concrete edges and rock faces. The sheath-to-core ratio across the Type A diameters ranges from 43.4% to 48% cover by mass, maintaining sufficient nylon cover mass to protect the load-bearing core during the abrasion and compression loading of repeated rope access work. Zero sheath slippage is measured across the 10.5mm, 11mm and 12mm Type A sizes under EN 1891 test conditions, confirming the cover is structurally stable relative to the core under working load. The rope has been tested for smooth and consistent performance with industry-standard descenders and backup devices, reducing judder and inconsistent braking that can cause technician fatigue on long descents. The four-colourway system, covering white and blue fleck, black, red and blue fleck, and blue and white fleck, enables straightforward site identification of rope type, diameter or team assignment without additional labelling.
