8-Plait Matt: Spun Polyester Dinghy Rope for Halyards and Control Lines
8-Plait Matt is a spun polyester rope manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire in an 8-plait single braid construction. The use of spun polyester rather than filament polyester produces a matte, textured surface with significantly higher grip than a standard filament braid, while remaining soft to the touch for hand use. This combination of grip and softness makes it well suited to dinghy halyards, sheets and control lines where the rope is handled repeatedly without gloves. The rope is heat processed at manufacture to reduce stretch. Specific gravity is 1.38, and the construction is resistant to UV, acid and alkali degradation with a heat resistance threshold of ~230°C. 8-Plait Matt is stocked in five colourways (white with blue fleck, blue, buff, red and black) across six diameters from 3mm to 10mm, all supplied on 200m reels. Note: 3mm is available in buff only; 8mm is available in white/blue fleck and blue only; 10mm is available in white/blue fleck only.

What Is 8-Plait Matt and Why Does Spun Polyester Matter for Dinghy Rope?
8-Plait Matt uses spun polyester rather than the filament polyester used in standard braid constructions. Where filament polyester is made from continuous smooth fibres producing a shiny, low-friction surface, spun polyester is manufactured from short fibres twisted together, creating a yarn with a textured, fibrous surface. When braided into an 8-plait construction, this gives the rope a matte appearance and a noticeably higher coefficient of friction against hands and deck hardware. For dinghy sailing, the practical result is a rope that grips securely through crew hands during tacks and gybes, holds knots reliably, and handles comfortably without gloves in cold or wet conditions. The matte surface also gives 8-Plait Matt a traditional, natural-fibre appearance that suits the aesthetic of classic and wooden dinghies, where a shiny synthetic braid would look out of place. The same spun polyester principle is used in English Braids’ 24 Plait Matt, which applies the same construction to a 24-plait cover for cruising yacht sheets and theatre rigging applications at larger diameters.
8-Plait Matt is manufactured at English Braids’ facility in Malvern, Worcestershire and sits within the polyester rope range as the entry-level dinghy construction for sailors who prioritise grip and hand feel. It is heat processed to reduce constructional stretch and stocked in five colourways across six diameters from 3mm to 10mm on 200m reels, making it a practical specification for chandlers and club stores supplying the dinghy rope range.

8-Plait Matt for Dinghy Halyards, Sheets and Control Lines
The 8-plait single braid construction produces a round, firm rope profile that runs cleanly through the small-diameter blocks, cleats and jammers used on dinghy rigs, and the matte spun polyester surface grips over cam cleats and around winch drums more positively than a smooth filament braid at equivalent diameter. Breaking loads from English Braids’ internal datasheets: 110kg at 3mm, 220kg at 4mm, 300kg at 5mm, 560kg at 6mm, 800kg at 8mm and 980kg at 10mm. The lower breaking loads at smaller diameters reflect the single-component 8-plait architecture compared to double braid constructions — at 6mm, 8-Plait Matt produces 560kg against 830kg for the equivalent Sprintline 16-plait. For applications where grip and feel are the primary criteria and the load is within the 8-plait range, this is the correct specification. For higher-load dinghy halyards and sheets where low extension is also required, Sprintline and the Dyneema core constructions within the dinghy rope range are the appropriate alternatives.
Colourway availability varies by diameter: white with blue fleck, blue, buff, red and black are all available from 4mm to 6mm; 3mm is available in buff only; 8mm in white/blue fleck and blue only; 10mm in white/blue fleck only. All diameters are supplied on 200m reels, making 8-Plait Matt appropriate for bulk supply to chandlers, club stores and boatyards specifying a traditional-look grip rope across the full dinghy diameter range.
