8-Plait Pre-Stretched: Solid Polyester Braid for Dinghy and Leisure Marine Use

8-Plait Pre-Stretched is a solid braid rope manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire from high-tenacity continuous filament polyester. Unlike double braid constructions, the 8-plait is a single-component braid with no separate core and cover: all eight strands carry load equally across the construction. The rope is heat set and pre-stretched at manufacture to minimise extension under working load, producing a low-stretch, flexible, anti-kinking rope that is soft to handle across a wide range of leisure marine applications. Specific gravity is 1.38. The rope has good resistance to UV, acid and alkali degradation. Available in white across 3mm to 10mm, with red and blue available from 4mm to 5mm, 8-Plait Pre-Stretched is used across dinghy sailing, cruising yacht flag halyards, fender rigging and light control line applications. Supplied in 100m, 200m and 300m reels depending on diameter.

  • Flag and burgee halyards

8-Plait Pre-Stretched as Dinghy Rope: Construction and Suitability

8-Plait Pre-Stretched is a practical dinghy rope for casual and club sailing where a low-cost, low-extension polyester braid is the appropriate specification. The solid 8-plait construction from high-tenacity filament polyester produces a rope that is flexible, soft to handle and anti-kinking, running cleanly through the small-diameter blocks, cleats and jammers used on dinghy rigs. The pre-stretched construction keeps extension low under working load, which matters on dinghy halyards where halyard creep causes sail shape to deteriorate across a race or a day’s sailing. Breaking loads of 600kg at 5mm, 880kg at 6mm and 1,000kg at 8mm cover the load range of halyards and mainsheets on dinghies from single-handed boats through to larger keelboats where simplicity and value are the primary specification criteria. For club fleets, training boats and casual dinghy sailors, 8-Plait Pre-Stretched provides the handling and performance characteristics of a pre-stretched construction at a lower unit cost than double braid alternatives. For performance dinghy and racing applications where breaking load and stretch elimination are the primary requirements, English Braids produces higher-specification constructions within the dinghy rope range.

8-Plait Pre-Stretched is also the standard specification for flag and burgee halyards on cruising yachts and club vessels, where the 3mm to 6mm diameter range, soft handle and low extension suit the light-load application. For fender lines and mooring accessories where a flexible, abrasion-tolerant rope is needed in moderate diameters, the 8mm diameter at 1,000kg breaking load is an appropriate and economical choice. The rope’s position within the wider leisure marine offering is covered on the cruising rope range page.

8-Plait Pre-Stretched Specification: Diameters, Breaking Loads and Availability

Breaking loads verified from English Braids’ internal datasheets: 250kg at 3mm, 420kg at 4mm, 600kg at 5mm, 880kg at 6mm, 1,000kg at 8mm and 1,700kg at 10mm. These figures cover the load range appropriate for dinghy halyards and sheets on single-handed and two-person boats, flag and burgee halyards on cruising vessels, fender lines and light control lines across the leisure marine range. White is stocked across all six diameters from 3mm to 10mm; red and blue are available from 4mm to 5mm only. The rope is supplied in 100m, 200m and 300m reels depending on diameter, giving chandlers and boatyards flexibility in stocking across the size range. For dinghy-specific rope specifications including higher-load options for performance sailing, see the dinghy rope range. For the full polyester rope offering including double braid constructions for cruising halyards and sheets, see the English Braids polyester rope range.
