Sprintline: 16-Plait Pre-Stretched Polyester Dinghy Rope
Sprintline is a 16-plait pre-stretched polyester rope manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire, designed specifically for dinghy sailing applications. The 16-plait construction uses a polyester core and polyester cover, heat set and pre-stretched at the point of manufacture to reduce extension under working load. Extension at 50% breaking load is 5%, producing a controlled low-stretch performance appropriate for dinghy halyards, control lines, outhauls, leach lines and lanyards. Specific gravity is 1.38. The rope is resistant to UV, acid and alkali degradation with a heat resistance threshold of ~230°C. Sprintline is stocked in eight colourways — yellow, blue, orange, red, black, green, grey and a second red variant — across four diameters from 3mm to 6mm. 3mm is supplied on 200m reels; 4mm to 6mm on 100m reels.

What Is Sprintline and How Is It Constructed?
Sprintline is a 100% polyester 16-plait rope manufactured by English Braids for dinghy sailing applications. Unlike double braid constructions with separate core and cover components, Sprintline uses a single 16-plait construction in which the polyester core and 16-plait outer layer work together as an integrated braid. This produces a round, firm rope profile that runs cleanly through the small-diameter blocks, jammers and cleats used on dinghy rigs, with a surface that is supple and comfortable to handle without the stiffness that higher-strand-count constructions can produce at small diameters. The rope is heat set and pre-stretched at manufacture, which stabilises the construction and limits extension under working load to 5% at 50% breaking load. This makes Sprintline appropriate for dinghy halyards where consistent sail shape under load is a practical requirement, and for control lines where reliable low-extension behaviour through a range of loads is more important than zero-stretch performance. For applications where stretch elimination is the primary requirement, English Braids produces SK78 Dyneema core constructions within the dinghy rope range.
Sprintline is manufactured at English Braids’ facility in Malvern, Worcestershire and sits within the polyester rope range as the primary dinghy-specific polyester control line construction. It is available in eight colourways with contrasting flecks across 3mm to 6mm, making colour-coded running rigging straightforward on single-handed and two-person dinghies. Specific gravity is 1.38; the rope is resistant to UV, acid and alkali degradation and rated to ~230°C.

Sprintline for Dinghy Halyards, Control Lines and Outhauls
Sprintline’s diameter range of 3mm to 6mm maps directly to the control line sizes used across the full range of racing and leisure dinghies, from single-handed boats such as the Laser and Solo through to two-person boats including the RS200, 420 and Wayfarer. At 5mm, the breaking load of 620kg covers the working load range for a mainsheet on boats up to approximately 200kg displacement. At 6mm, the 830kg breaking load is appropriate for halyards and mainsheets on larger keelboats and performance two-person dinghies. Breaking loads are verified from English Braids’ internal datasheets: 260kg at 3mm, 460kg at 4mm, 620kg at 5mm and 830kg at 6mm. The pre-stretched construction keeps extension consistent across the load range, which means halyard tension set at the dock holds reliably throughout a race without progressive creep relaxing the rig.
Sprintline is stocked for immediate dispatch across all eight colourways and four diameters, making it a practical specification for chandlers and club stores stocking a dinghy control line range. 3mm is available on 200m reels for bulk supply; 4mm to 6mm are supplied on 100m reels. For performance dinghy racing where zero-stretch halyards and sheets are the requirement, the D-Racer 16 and Dinghy Dyneema constructions use SK78 Dyneema cores within the English Braids dinghy rope range.
