Dynastay

Dynastay is English Braids’ pre-stretched DM20 Dyneema® rope, engineered specifically for permanent static installations where elongation under sustained load is a structural failure risk. DM20 is chemically distinct from SK-series Dyneema grades, with molecular anchors within the polymer chain that inhibit the fibre sliding that causes creep in standard HMPE, delivering dimensional stability that holds across seasons of sustained tension in forestays, backstays and standing rigging.

Available in 3–13mm diameter with breaking loads from 1,350 kg at 3mm to 19,000 kg at 13mm, pre-stretched at manufacture for immediate deployment without bedding-in elongation. UV-stable, zero water absorption, floats, and field-spliceable. Specify diameter and length on enquiry; custom lengths available.

Typical Applications
  • Forestays and backstays on racing and performance yachts
  • Cap shrouds and intermediate shrouds
  • Running backstays under sustained static tension
  • Wire standing rigging replacement
  • Structural tethers and safety lines
  • Soft shackles
  • Tiller extensions and structural lashings
  • Standing rigging on classic and wooden yachts

DM20 Dyneema®: Why the Grade Matters for Standing Rigging

Most Dyneema® rope uses SK-series fibre — SK75 or SK78 — optimised for dynamic, high-cycle applications where fatigue resistance and break load are the primary requirements. In those grades, some degree of creep is accepted as a trade-off. For running rigging tensioned and eased repeatedly, this is not a problem. For standing rigging that holds a rig under continuous tension across weeks, months or a full sailing season, it is.

Dynastay uses Dyneema® DM20, a chemically distinct grade developed specifically for sustained static loading. DM20 incorporates molecular anchors within the polymer chain that restrict the fibre-level sliding mechanism responsible for creep in standard HMPE. The practical outcome is a rope that holds the rig geometry set at installation. A backstay tensioned to achieve a particular mast bend and forestay sag will maintain that geometry through an offshore passage, a lay-up period, and the following season, without the progressive slackening that requires standing rigging to be re-tensioned or replaced. Available in 3–13mm with breaking loads from 1,350 kg (3mm) to 19,000 kg (13mm) on spliced terminations. UK manufactured.

Synthetic Standing Rigging: Replacing Wire with Dyneema®

Wire standing rigging has three practical disadvantages: it corrodes, it is heavy aloft, and it provides no visible indication of internal fatigue before failure. Replacing wire with Dynastay addresses all three. DM20 Dyneema® does not corrode, weighs a fraction of the equivalent steel wire, and as a braid construction can be inspected visually along its full length for surface wear, kinking or cover damage. The weight reduction aloft has a direct effect on stability margins and roll period, measurable on racing and performance boats and noticeable on cruising yachts in lively conditions.

The substitution is diameter-for-diameter for most wire sizes given Dynastay’s break load range: a 7mm Dynastay at 6,740 kg spliced replaces a steel wire of larger diameter at equivalent or greater strength, reducing windage and top-hamper weight simultaneously. Pre-stretched at manufacture, Dynastay requires no bedding-in period after installation — rig tune holds without the re-tensioning cycles that new wire typically requires. For halyards and sheets where running rigging is the requirement, Racing Dyneema® Pro uses an SK78 core for dynamic, high-cycle applications.
