Silva Prusik Pro: EN564 Prusik Cord with Dyneema® SK78 Core and Technora® Cover

Silva Prusik Pro is a technical EN564 certified prusik cord manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire. It combines a 12-strand Dyneema® SK78 core with a 32-plait cover constructed from a 50/50 blend of Technora® (polyamide-aramid) and polyester, producing a cord engineered specifically for friction hitch applications where heat generation, sustained load and mechanical wear are primary concerns.

The SK78 core delivers the low creep characteristics that make it the correct choice for sustained-load applications. Where SK75 fibre creeps under constant tension, SK78’s engineered molecular architecture resists long-chain sliding, maintaining load position over time. For friction hitch use, where the cord may be under load for extended periods, this creep resistance has direct operational relevance.

The Technora® component of the cover addresses the heat generated at the friction interface. Technora® is a para-aramid fibre with a melting point exceeding 500°C, significantly higher than the polyester used in standard prusik cords. In high-speed descents or repeated hitch loading, cover temperature rises sharply at the contact point. The Technora®/polyester blend maintains cover integrity at temperatures the Silva Prusik polyester equivalent cannot match.

Average breaking load is 21.4 kN to EN564. At 8mm diameter, the cord is narrower than the standard 9mm Silva Prusik while delivering a higher breaking load, a direct consequence of the higher-tenacity fibres used in both core and cover.

Typical Applications
  • Friction hitch systems in arborist climbing
  • Prusik loops and progress capture in rope access
  • Backup safety hitches in high-load configurations
  • Technical rescue friction hitch applications
  • EN564 certified height safety accessory cord
  • EN795(B) anchor-compatible friction cord

Dyneema® SK78 and Technora®: Fibre Selection for High-Performance Prusik Cord

Standard prusik cords use polyester throughout. Polyester delivers adequate strength and reasonable abrasion resistance for general arborist climbing, but its melting point of approximately 260°C and susceptibility to creep under sustained load represent real limitations in demanding applications. Silva Prusik Pro addresses both with a two-fibre approach: Dyneema® SK78 in the core and Technora® in the cover blend.

Dyneema® SK78 is a high-performance HMPE (high-modulus polyethylene) fibre produced by DSM. Its molecular architecture includes engineered side chains that anchor polymer strands against long-chain sliding under sustained load, the mechanism responsible for creep in standard HMPE. The result is a measured creep rate 78% lower than SK75 under equivalent conditions. In a friction hitch prusik that may remain under bodyweight load for extended periods, this matters: the hitch position remains predictable and the cord retains its working geometry over time.

Technora® is a para-aramid fibre produced by Teijin with a melting point exceeding 500°C and tensile strength significantly higher than polyester at equivalent diameter. In the Silva Prusik Pro cover, it is blended 50/50 with polyester to balance heat resistance with the handling and grip characteristics a friction hitch cord must deliver. For the full Dyneema® SK78 product range see Dyneema® and HMPE ropes, and for the Dyneema® brand page see Dyneema® at English Braids. For the Technora® brand page see Technora® at English Braids.

Prusik Cord Selection for Arborist and Rope Access: Silva Prusik and Silva Prusik Pro Compared

English Braids produces two prusik cords for professional climbing and height safety applications. The Silva Prusik is a 9mm EN564 and EN795(B):2012 certified polyester cord: 12-strand core, 32-plait cover, 18.1 kN average breaking load. It is the correct specification for standard arborist friction hitch use where heat generation and sustained creep are not primary factors.

Silva Prusik Pro is the technical variant. The 8mm diameter is narrower, the 21.4 kN average breaking load is higher, and the fibre construction is substantially different. The Dyneema® SK78 core resists creep under sustained tension. The Technora®/polyester cover maintains structural integrity at temperatures that would degrade a standard polyester cover. For professional rope access, rescue or high-cycle arborist work where the friction interface is under repeated or prolonged stress, the Pro construction is the appropriate choice.

Silva Prusik Pro sits within the English Braids arborist climbing range alongside the EN1891 certified Silva-Tex 16 and Silva-Tex 24 climbing ropes, the Rig-Tex 12 and Rig-Tex 24 rigging lines, and the full arboriculture range. For rope access and industrial climbing applications see the rope access range.
