Silva-Tex 24: EN 1891 Type A Certified Arborist Climbing Rope with Braided Nylon Core

Silva-Tex 24 is an EN 1891 Type A certified arborist climbing rope manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire, combining a braided nylon core with a 24-plait polyester sheath. At 11.5mm and 9.29 kg/100m, it is the lighter and more supple option in the English Braids arborist climbing range compared to the 12.4mm Silva-Tex 16.

The braided nylon core provides the energy absorption and strength properties required for EN 1891 Type A certification. The 24-plait polyester sheath gives the rope excellent abrasion resistance at contact points with bark, branch crotches and friction hitch hardware, and a smooth, supple hand feel suited to arborists who prefer a more flexible climbing line for canopy movement and work positioning.

The mixed construction means each component material contributes distinct properties. The polyester sheath handles abrasion and UV exposure. The nylon core handles dynamic load and energy absorption. Overall heat resistance is limited by the nylon core component at ~220°C.

Silva-Tex 24 is available in three colourways (orange 005/, pink 968/ and yellow 980/) in two configurations: pre-terminated with sewn eye or spliced eye in 25m, 35m, 45m and 60m lengths, and as plain reels at 200m.

Typical Applications
  • Professional arborist climbing and canopy work positioning
  • Ascent and descent in arboricultural operations
  • Tree access for aerial tree surgery
  • Lightweight climbing line for extended canopy movement
  • EN 1891 certified professional tree climbing
  • Pre-rigged sewn eye deployment in climbing systems

Braided Nylon Core and 24-Plait Polyester Sheath: Silva-Tex 24 Construction

Silva-Tex 24 differs from the Silva-Tex 16 in two fundamental construction choices: the core material and the sheath configuration. Where Silva-Tex 16 uses a torque-balanced high elongation polyester twist core, Silva-Tex 24 uses a braided nylon core. Nylon provides higher elongation under load than polyester, which gives the rope more energy absorption capacity in a fall arrest event and a more forgiving, dynamic feel during climbing. This makes Silva-Tex 24 better suited to arborists who climb actively through the canopy and prefer a rope that moves with them rather than holding rigidly.

The 24-plait polyester sheath provides excellent abrasion resistance and UV resistance. The finer, tighter braid of a 24-plait cover produces a smoother rope surface than the 16-strand construction of Silva-Tex 16, which runs more fluidly through friction hitches and climbing hardware. The trade-off is that the 24-plait cover is less coarse than the 16-strand construction, so Silva-Tex 16 retains an advantage in the most abrasion-intensive environments. At 11.5mm and 9.29 kg/100m, Silva-Tex 24 is lighter and thinner than Silva-Tex 16, which is the practical reason many arborists choose it for longer climbing sessions where rope weight in the system is a consideration. Silva-Tex 24 in the English Braids Arborist Climbing Range

Silva-Tex 24 sits alongside the Silva-Tex 16 as the two EN 1891 Type A certified climbing ropes in the English Braids arborist range. Silva-Tex 16 is the heavier-duty option at 12.4mm with a 16-strand polyester cover; Silva-Tex 24 is the lighter, more supple option at 11.5mm with a braided nylon core and 24-plait polyester sheath. Both are available with pre-terminated eye configurations in the same length options (25m, 35m, 45m and 60m) and on 200m plain reels.

For arborist rigging operations involving lowering cut sections and load management, English Braids manufactures the Rig-Tex 12 and Rig-Tex 24 polyester rigging ropes. For the full polyester rope range see the polyester rope range.
