T-Tech Cover: Technora® and Polyester Composite Cover for Racing Running Rigging

T-Tech Cover is a composite racing rope cover manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire, combining Technora® aramid co-polymer fibre and polyester in a 24-plait braided construction designed for high-performance running rigging. The cover is applied over a compatible Dyneema® or HMPE core to produce a finished racing rope with the cover performance characteristics required for grand prix and competitive club racing. The two primary advantages of the Technora® component over a standard polyester-only cover are heat resistance and abrasion resistance. For heat resistance: polyester is heat weakened at approximately 160 to 180°C and fails at approximately 230°C. Technora® is heat weakened at approximately 250°C and does not reach its failure temperature until above 400°C. In a running rigging cover, this difference is directly relevant at clutch jaws, turning blocks and winch drum contact points where rapid easing under high load generates significant heat. The Technora® component maintains structural integrity at temperatures that degrade or melt a polyester-only cover. For abrasion resistance: Technora® fibre provides significantly higher resistance to surface abrasion than standard polyester, extending cover life at the contact points that generate the most wear across a racing season. The polyester component of the blend provides handling compliance. T-Tech Cover is supplied with a 4mm polyester mousing line to assist assembly. Made to order in yellow, blue and red across 8mm to 20mm on 200m reels.

Typical Applications
  • Racing halyards subject to high clutch load and rapid easing cycles
  • High-load mainsheets and headsail sheets on grand prix keelboats
  • Control lines at high-wear clutch and block contact points
  • Custom rigger-built assemblies over Dyneema® cores
  • Replacement covers for racing ropes retaining a serviceable core

Why Technora® in a Racing Rope Cover: Heat Resistance and Abrasion Resistance

A racing rope cover has two primary failure modes: heat degradation and abrasion wear. Standard polyester covers begin to lose strength at approximately 160 to 180°C and reach their failure point at approximately 230°C. In a high-load running rigging system, clutch jaws, turning blocks and winch drums generate localised heat at contact points during rapid easing under load. On a grand prix race boat, a halyard or sheet that is eased quickly under full sailing load generates enough friction heat at the clutch to damage a standard polyester cover over repeated cycles across a season. T-Tech addresses this through the Technora® component of the cover blend. Technora® aramid co-polymer fibre is heat weakened at approximately 250°C and does not reach its failure temperature until above 400°C. This means the cover retains structural integrity and grip performance at contact point temperatures that would degrade or melt a polyester-only construction. On abrasion resistance, Technora® fibre outperforms standard polyester at the surface contact points that generate the most wear: clutch jaws, lead block sheaves and mast entry points where the cover is subject to repeated compression and lateral abrasion under load. The polyester component of the T-Tech blend provides handling compliance and softness in the hand while the Technora® carries the heat and abrasion load. T-Tech Cover for Grand Prix Halyards, Sheets and Custom Racing Rope Assemblies

T-Tech Cover is specified by professional riggers and sailing teams building custom racing rope assemblies where the cover specification is determined independently of the core. The cover is compatible with English Braids’ bare Dyneema® single braid range including DC78 and DC99 grades. Typical applications include grand prix halyard covers where clutch grip and heat resistance are the primary requirements, headsail and spinnaker sheet covers on high-load winch systems, and replacement covers fitted over serviceable Dyneema® cores at end-of-season refit. For applications requiring an Aramid and polyester cover blend, see A-Tech Cover. For a Dyneema® and polyester cover blend, see D-Tech Cover. All three covers are made to order at the English Braids facility in Malvern, Worcestershire. For bespoke rigging enquiries or ordering information, contact the English Braids team.
