D-Tech Cover: Dyneema® and Polyester Composite Sheath for High-Performance Rigging
The D-Tech Cover is a technical composite rope sheath manufactured by English Braids at its facility in Malvern, Worcestershire. Constructed from a 24-plait blend of Dyneema® racing rope fibres and high-tenacity polyester, D-Tech is engineered to add targeted abrasion resistance to high-modulus cores. This sheath allows professional riggers to protect rigging at hardware contact points while maintaining the strict weight budgets of grand prix sailing programmes. Unlike standard polyester jackets, the inclusion of Dyneema® in the cover provides a higher coefficient of friction and superior durability under cyclic loading. D-Tech is supplied made to order across diameters from 8mm to 20mm on 200m reels. To assist with complex tapering and core-drawing, every reel is supplied pre-threaded with a 4mm polyester mousing line.

What Is the Mechanical Advantage of a Dyneema® Composite Cover?
In high-performance yacht racing, every gram of weight aloft affects vessel performance. The DTech Cover is specified by sailing teams to provide essential abrasion protection for Dyneema® racing rope cores without the significant weight penalty of a heavy polyester jacket. By blending Dyneema® fibres into the 24-plait cover, English Braids creates a composite sheath with a higher coefficient of friction and greater abrasion tolerance than conventional materials. This allows riggers to use smaller diameter ropes that still withstand the mechanical stresses at clutches and winches. Within the Dyneema® brand range, the DTech cover provides the durability required for high-cycle racing while remaining lightweight enough to be used on tapered lines where sections of the core are left bare to reduce drag and weight.
Technical Rigging: How DTech Integrates into Tapered Systems
Professional riggers utilize DTech covers to build bespoke tapered halyards and sheets where cover weight is stripped from the sections of the line that do not encounter hardware. English Braids supports this complex rigging requirement by supplying every reel of DTech with a 4mm polyester mousing line pre-threaded through the sheath. This detail allows riggers to draw the high-modulus core through the bespoke sheath efficiently, ensuring a clean transition and reducing the risk of snagging during the tapering process. Manufactured to order at our Malvern facility, DTech integrates seamlessly with the broader racing rope range. For applications where friction-generated heat is the primary concern, such as high-speed winch easing, riggers may consider A-Tech (Aramid) or T-Tech (Technora) as alternatives to the weight-optimised DTech construction.
