Silverline: Flexible 24-Plait Polyester Double Braid Rope for Sailing

Silverline is English Braids’ softest and most flexible polyester double braid rope, manufactured at our facility in Malvern, Worcestershire. The construction uses a 12-strand polyester core enclosed by a 24-plait polyester cover, heat set and pre-stretched to reduce extension under working load, with the cover produced to a softer finish than the standard Braid-on-Braid construction. Extension at 50% breaking load is 5%; extension at break is 25%. Specific gravity is 1.38 across both core and cover. The rope has good resistance to UV, acid and alkali degradation, with a heat resistance threshold of ~230°C for both components.

Silverline is stocked in five colourways — blue, yellow, black, red and green — across five diameters from 6mm to 14mm. Sizes from 6mm to 10mm are supplied on 200m reels; 12mm and 14mm on 100m reels.

Typical Applications
  • Cruising yacht halyards
  • Mainsheet and genoa sheets
  • Control lines and kicker lines
  • Running rigging on leisure yachts
  • Topping lifts
  • Flag and burgee halyards

What Makes Silverline Different from Standard Braid-on-Braid?

Silverline uses the same fundamental double braid architecture as English Braids’ standard Braid-on-Braid: a 12-strand polyester core enclosed within a 24-plait polyester cover, heat set and pre-stretched at manufacture. The cover yarn bundles are heavier per carrier, producing a broader, more open braid pattern with three distinct strand groups visible across the rope width rather than the tighter two-group pattern of standard Braid-on-Braid. This difference in cover construction is what gives Silverline its characteristic appearance and its softer hand feel: with fewer, larger yarn bundles per carrier there is less fibre-to-fibre compression within the cover, which produces a more supple, flexible rope surface without reducing the tensile performance of the 24-plait structure. Extension at 50% breaking load remains 5%, consistent with the Braid-on-Braid construction, and extension at break is 25%. Both core and cover are 100% polyester with a specific gravity of 1.38, heat resistant to ~230°C, and rated Yes for UV, acid and alkali resistance.

Silverline is manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire and sits within the polyester rope range as the premium handling option for leisure marine applications. It is available in five vibrant colourways (blue, yellow, black, red and green) making colour-coded running rigging straightforward on cruising yachts. For crews who prioritise ease of handling over raw cost, Silverline is the correct specification within the cruising rope range.

Silverline for Sailing Halyards and Sheets: Handling and Specification

Sailing rope for halyards and sheets on cruising yachts is handled repeatedly under load: hoisting sails, easing sheets, coiling lines on cleats and winch drums. The handling characteristic of the rope at the point of use matters as much as its breaking load, which is why Silverline’s softer 24-plait cover is a practical specification choice rather than a cosmetic one. A softer cover reduces friction through clutches and fairleads, is more comfortable to handle without gloves in cold conditions, and coils without the stiffness that makes standard braid harder to manage in a confined cockpit. Breaking loads from English Braids’ internal datasheets are 1,200kg at 6mm, 1,800kg at 8mm, 3,100kg at 10mm, 3,890kg at 12mm and 5,400kg at 14mm, covering halyards and sheets for leisure yachts from 20 to 45 feet. The pre-stretched construction keeps working extension to 5% at 50% breaking load, maintaining consistent halyard tension across a passage without the progressive relaxation that affects non-pre-stretched polyester constructions.

Silverline is stocked in five diameters from 6mm to 14mm on 200m reels at 6mm to 10mm and 100m reels at 12mm and 14mm, available for immediate dispatch to chandlers, boatyards and riggers. For cruising applications requiring lower stretch than polyester can provide, English Braids manufactures Dyneema core halyards within the cruising range, including blended core and full SK78 constructions. For the full double braid polyester offering including the standard Braid-on-Braid construction, see the polyester rope range.
