8-Strand Polyester Anchorbraid: Torsionally Neutral Anchor Warp for Chain-Combined Mooring
8-Strand Polyester Anchorbraid is a multiplait anchor warp manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire from 100% polyester in an 8-strand torsionally neutral construction. The torsionally neutral multiplait build prevents the rope from twisting or kinking as it runs over a chain windlass or feeds out of a foredeck anchor locker, which is the primary handling advantage of 8-strand construction over 3-strand twisted rope in anchor warp applications. Polyester retains more strength and flexibility over time than nylon when used in chain-combined anchor systems, and does not absorb water, meaning the rope maintains consistent weight and handling characteristics when repeatedly deployed and recovered. Extension at 50% breaking load is 15% and extension at break is 25%, providing shock absorption under anchor surge loading. Specific gravity is 1.38. The rope splices directly to chain and is resistant to UV, acid and alkali degradation, with a heat resistance threshold of ~230°C.

Why Choose Polyester Over Nylon for Anchor Warps Used with Chain?
When an anchor system combines rope warp with chain, polyester is the technically correct rope specification rather than nylon. Nylon’s high extension and water absorption characteristics, which are advantages in pure rope mooring systems, become disadvantages when the rope is used in combination with chain. Nylon absorbs water under repeated deployment, which progressively increases the rope’s weight and alters its handling. Polyester does not absorb water and maintains consistent weight and flexibility throughout its service life. Polyester also retains more tensile strength over time in this environment: nylon degrades faster than polyester when subjected to the abrasion at the chain-to-rope splice junction and the UV exposure of regular foredeck installation. The 8-strand torsionally neutral multiplait construction of English Braids’ Anchorbraid means the rope does not rotate under load or generate torque as it feeds over a windlass drum, eliminating the kinking and hockling that occurs when standard 3-strand twisted rope is used on a windlass. The rope runs cleanly out of a foredeck anchor locker without snagging on the locker walls or fouling the windlass, and the multiplait construction stows flat and coils easily for compact storage.
English Braids manufactures 8-Strand Polyester Anchorbraid at its facility in Malvern, Worcestershire. It sits within the polyester rope range as the anchor warp specification for chain-combined systems, and is available in white from 12mm to 16mm. For the full mooring and anchoring context see the mooring rope range.

8-Strand Polyester Anchorbraid for Anchor Warps, Windlass Systems and Marine Mooring
In leisure marine applications, 8-Strand Polyester Anchorbraid is specified for anchor warps on cruising yachts and motorboats running windlass-retrieved chain-and-rope systems from 12mm to 16mm. The 15% extension at 50% breaking load provides useful shock absorption when the anchor rode comes taut under surge loading, and the torsionally neutral construction ensures the rope feeds consistently through the windlass without generating back-twist in the chain. Breaking loads verified from English Braids’ internal datasheets: 3,000kg at 12mm, 3,510kg at 14mm and 4,650kg at 16mm. For anchor warp applications where nylon’s higher extension is preferred and chain is not part of the system, English Braids’ 8-Strand Nylon Anchorbraid is the appropriate alternative.
