3-Strand Polyester: Heat-Set Polyester Rope for Mooring and Lifting

3-Strand Standard Polyester is a 100% polyester rope manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire using a traditional 3-strand twisted construction. The rope is post-laid heat set during manufacture to relieve the constructional stresses introduced by twisting and cabling, producing a finished rope that is dimensionally stable and resistant to kinking and hockling. Extension at 50% breaking load is 16%; extension at break is 25%, giving the rope useful shock absorption characteristics under sudden load. Specific gravity is 1.38. The rope is resistant to UV, acid and alkali degradation, with a heat resistance threshold of ~230°C. The torque-balanced construction means the rope splices easily and runs smoothly through blocks, fairleads and cleats without rotation under load. 3-Strand Standard Polyester is available in white, navy and black across 6mm to 32mm, and in beige made to order. Diameters from 6mm to 18mm are supplied on reels; 20mm and above are supplied as coils. Note: 6mm is available in white only.

Typical Applications

What Is Post-Laid Heat Setting and Why Does It Matter for 3-Strand Rope?

Standard 3-strand rope is manufactured by twisting individual fibres into yarns, yarns into strands, and strands into the finished rope. Each stage of twisting introduces constructional stress into the fibres, and in an untreated rope these stresses cause the finished construction to be prone to kinking, rotation under load and hockling when the rope is slack. English Braids’ 3-Strand Standard Polyester is post-laid heat set: after the rope is laid up, it is passed through a heat treatment process that relieves the internal stresses in the fibres without altering the twist structure. The result is a rope that is stable and kink-resistant in use, does not rotate or corkscrew under load, and splices cleanly because the strands lie consistently and do not spring back when opened. The heat treatment also improves the rope’s dimensional stability over time: standard polyester 3-strand that has not been heat set will continue to settle and shorten slightly under repeated loading as the twist beds in. The post-laid heat set process eliminates this bedding-in behaviour at manufacture, so the rope delivered to the chandler or boatyard is already at its stable working dimensions.

3-Strand Standard Polyester is manufactured by English Braids at its facility in Malvern, Worcestershire and sits within the polyester rope range as the general-purpose 3-strand option across the widest diameter range of any product in the polyester family. It is available in white, navy and black from 6mm to 32mm, with beige available made to order, covering mooring line specifications from small leisure yachts through to commercial marine and lifting applications. For the full context of 3-strand rope within the mooring range, see the mooring rope range.

3-Strand Standard Polyester for Mooring Lines, Lifting and General Marine Use

In mooring applications, 3-Strand Standard Polyester provides the correct combination of controlled extension and handling ease for pontoon, marina and tidal berth mooring across a wide range of vessel sizes. The 16% extension at 50% breaking load is higher than pre-stretched constructions, which gives the rope useful shock absorption properties when vessels surge against their lines in tidal berths and exposed anchorages. Breaking loads verified from English Braids’ internal datasheets run from 1,300kg at 6mm through to 18,840kg at 32mm, covering mooring line specifications from leisure yachts and canal boats at the smaller diameters through to commercial marine mooring, tow lines and general lifting applications at 20mm to 32mm. For mooring applications where lower extension and higher stability are the primary requirements, English Braids’ 3-Strand Pre-Stretched is the appropriate alternative within the mooring range.

Beyond leisure marine use, 3-Strand Standard Polyester is listed across commercial marine, arborist, theatre and events, utilities and defence applications on the English Braids datasheet, reflecting its role as a general-purpose workhorse construction. The torque-balanced 3-strand structure splices cleanly and terminates easily without specialist equipment, which is why it remains the standard specification for applications requiring a durable, easily maintained rope across a wide diameter range. All diameters from 6mm to 18mm are supplied on reels; 20mm and above are supplied as coils. For the full English Braids polyester rope offering see the polyester rope range.
