3-Strand Nylon: High-Extension Nylon Rope for Mooring, Anchoring and Shock Loads

3-Strand Nylon is a hawser-laid nylon rope manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire. Nylon’s characteristic high extension under load makes this the correct specification for mooring, anchoring and towing applications where the rope must absorb dynamic and shock loading rather than resist it. Extension at 50% breaking load is 16%, significantly higher than 3-strand polyester equivalents, which allows the rope to stretch and recover under surge loads, reducing peak forces transmitted to cleats, fairleads and hull fittings. The construction is heat set and torque balanced to minimise kinking and hockling in use, and the rope splices easily despite the elasticity of the nylon fibre. Specific gravity is 1.19. The rope is resistant to alkali and UV degradation; nylon is not resistant to acid and should not be used in acid environments. Available in white across the full range from 5mm to 28mm. Black is available from 6mm to 16mm and provides significantly improved UV resistance, which is particularly important for nylon fibre which is more susceptible to UV degradation than polyester. For permanent outdoor and marine installation from 6mm to 16mm, black is the recommended colourway. Note: 28mm is supplied as coils at 220m.

Typical Applications
  • Mooring lines for tidal berths and exposed anchorages
  • Anchor rodes and anchor lines
  • Tow lines and warping lines
  • Shock-absorbing dock lines and spring lines
  • Commercial marine mooring and tow applications
  • General lifting and winching where elastic recovery is required

Why Use Nylon Rope for Mooring: Extension, Shock Absorption and Material Properties

Nylon rope is the correct specification for mooring and anchor applications where dynamic loading is a regular condition. Unlike polyester, which is designed to minimise extension under load, nylon has an inherently high extension characteristic: at 50% breaking load, English Braids’ 3-Strand Nylon extends 16%. In a tidal berth or exposed anchorage where a vessel surges against its lines under wind and swell loading, this extension allows the rope to absorb the peak load and return energy gradually rather than transmitting the full shock load directly to deck hardware and hull fittings. The practical result is less stress on cleats, bollards and fairleads, and a mooring system that is more forgiving of sudden load spikes than an equivalent polyester system. For pontoon mooring in protected marinas where lines are under consistent static tension and controlled length matters, polyester is the appropriate specification. For tidal berths, anchorages and tow lines where dynamic load absorption is the priority, nylon is correct. English Braids manufactures 3-Strand Nylon from hawser-laid nylon fibre, heat set and torque balanced at manufacture at our Malvern facility to reduce kinking and hockling in use.

Nylon is more susceptible to UV degradation than polyester, which is why the black colourway provides a meaningful performance advantage for installations within the 6mm to 16mm diameter range. Carbon black pigment absorbs UV radiation across the fibre cross-section and significantly extends service life compared to white nylon in continuous solar exposure. 3-Strand Nylon sits within the English Braids nylon rope range and is listed within the mooring rope range for leisure marine applications.

3-Strand Nylon for Mooring Lines, Anchor Rodes and Commercial Marine Use

In leisure marine applications, 3-Strand Nylon is specified for tidal berth mooring lines, anchor rodes, tow lines and dock spring lines where controlled extension under surge load is the primary performance requirement. Breaking loads verified from English Braids’ internal datasheets: 580kg at 5mm, 1,090kg at 6mm, 1,700kg at 8mm, 2,500kg at 10mm, 3,150kg at 12mm, 4,700kg at 14mm, 6,100kg at 16mm, 7,300kg at 18mm, 8,800kg at 20mm, 12,800kg at 24mm and 17,100kg at 28mm. These figures cover mooring and towing load requirements from leisure yachts through to larger commercial marine vessels. Available in white across all diameters; black available from 6mm to 16mm. For mooring applications requiring lower extension and greater stability under consistent static load, English Braids’ 3-Strand Standard Polyester is the appropriate alternative.
