8-Strand Nylon Anchorbraid: Torque-Neutral Nylon Anchor Rope for Maximum Shock Absorption

8-Strand Nylon Anchorbraid is a multiplait nylon anchor rope manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire in an 8-strand torque-neutral construction with a longer constructional pitch than standard 3-strand twisted rope. The torque-neutral multiplait build means the rope does not rotate or generate twist under load, making it easy to handle over long lengths and eliminating the kinking behaviour of twisted constructions when run over windlasses or fed from anchor lockers. Nylon’s characteristic high extension gives the rope a 35% extension at break — significantly higher than polyester equivalents — providing maximum shock absorption under anchor surge and mooring load spikes. Extension at 50% breaking load is 13%. The longer constructional pitch also produces low noise under load, which is a practical advantage in overnight anchoring situations. The rope splices directly to chain. Specific gravity is 1.19. Nylon is resistant to alkali and UV degradation but is not resistant to acid and should not be used in acid environments. Heat resistance threshold is ~240°C. Available in white and black from 10mm to 20mm; 24mm to 32mm are available in white only and supplied as coils.

Typical Applications
  • Anchor warps on leisure yachts, motorboats and cruising vessels
  • Anchor rodes and mooring warps where maximum shock absorption is required
  • Tidal berth and exposed anchorage mooring lines
  • Commercial marine anchoring and mooring
  • Canal boat and narrowboat mooring lines
  • General winching and lifting where high elastic recovery is required

Why 8-Strand Nylon Anchorbraid for Maximum Shock Absorption in Anchor and Mooring Applications?

The 8-Strand Nylon Anchorbraid combines two independent sources of extension: the high natural elasticity of nylon fibre and the geometric extension built into the longer constructional pitch of the 8-strand multiplait construction. Where a standard 3-strand twisted nylon rope relies primarily on the fibre’s own elasticity, the multiplait adds a constructional extension component as the braid geometry deforms under load before the fibre itself begins to stretch. The result is a rope with 35% extension at break — higher than English Braids’ 3-strand nylon constructions — and a load-extension curve that absorbs peak surge forces progressively rather than loading up sharply. In overnight anchoring in exposed conditions, this progressive load absorption is the difference between a rope system that damps vessel movement and one that allows the vessel to snatch against its gear. The torque-neutral construction eliminates the rotation and kinking that occurs with twisted 3-strand rope when it is deployed and recovered over a windlass or allowed to lie unsupported over long lengths, which is a practical advantage on vessels with large anchor lockers and longer scope requirements. The low noise characteristic under sustained load is a further benefit specific to the 8-strand construction — the interlocked braid geometry does not produce the low-frequency vibration that some twisted rope constructions transmit to deck hardware under wind and current loading.

English Braids manufactures 8-Strand Nylon Anchorbraid at its facility in Malvern, Worcestershire. It sits within the nylon rope range as the maximum-extension anchor and mooring specification, and is available in white and black from 10mm to 20mm, with 24mm to 32mm in white supplied as coils. For the full anchoring and mooring context see the mooring rope range.

8-Strand Nylon Anchorbraid for Anchor Warps, Mooring Lines and Commercial Marine Use

In leisure marine applications, 8-Strand Nylon Anchorbraid is specified for anchor warps, mooring warps and tidal berth lines on cruising yachts, motorboats and larger leisure vessels where the maximum available shock absorption is the priority. Breaking loads verified from English Braids’ internal datasheets: 2,850kg at 10mm, 3,760kg at 12mm, 4,390kg at 14mm, 6,500kg at 16mm, 7,400kg at 18mm, 9,700kg at 20mm, 14,370kg at 24mm, 18,500kg at 28mm and 23,930kg at 32mm. This range covers mooring and anchoring specifications from mid-size leisure yachts through to commercial marine mooring applications at the larger diameters. For anchor warp applications where chain forms part of the system and lower extension with better UV stability are the priorities, English Braids’ 8-Strand Polyester Anchorbraid is the appropriate alternative.
