Dockline: Double Braid Polyester Mooring Rope for Leisure and Cruising Yachts

Dockline is a double braid polyester mooring rope manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire. The construction uses a 16-plait polyester core enclosed by a 24-plait polyester cover, built to a softer specification than standard braid-on-braid to produce a mooring line that is easier to handle, coil and store during berthing operations. Both core and cover are 100% high-tenacity polyester with a specific gravity of 1.38, heat set at manufacture for dimensional stability. The rope is resistant to UV, acid and alkali degradation, with a heat resistance threshold of ~230°C for both components. Dockline is stocked in three colourways (black, navy and reflective) across five diameters from 12mm to 20mm. Sizes from 12mm to 14mm are supplied on 200m reels; 16mm to 20mm on 100m reels. The black colourway is also available as a sustainable rPET option.

Typical Applications
  • Mooring lines for leisure and cruising yachts
  • Pontoon and marina berth lines
  • Stern, bow and spring lines
  • Canal boat and narrowboat mooring lines

What Makes Dockline Different from Standard Braid-on-Braid?

Dockline shares the same fundamental double braid architecture as English Braids’ standard Braid-on-Braid: a 16-plait polyester core enclosed within a 24-plait polyester cover, heat set at manufacture. The difference is in the cover specification. Dockline’s cover is produced to a softer finish than the standard construction, which means the rope has a noticeably more pliable feel in the hand and coils more readily without the stiffness that makes standard braid harder to manage during repeated berthing and unberthing operations. For a mooring line that is handled daily in marina and pontoon environments, this difference in handling characteristic is a practical advantage: softer lines are easier to throw, easier to cleat, and easier to stow in cockpit lockers without bulk. The rope splices cleanly and holds knots well, making it straightforward for boatyards and riggers to produce finished mooring assemblies with eyes and whippings to any length specification.

English Braids manufactures Dockline at its facility in Malvern, Worcestershire as the standard polyester mooring line within the mooring range. It is stocked in three colourways across five diameters from 12mm to 20mm, covering the mooring line diameter range for leisure yachts from 25 to 60 feet. The black colourway is also available as a sustainable rPET construction. For larger vessel mooring applications above 20mm, see the Superyacht Dockline Polyester.

Dockline for Pontoon, Marina and Berth Mooring: Specification and Availability

Dockline covers the working diameter range for mooring lines on leisure yachts from 25 to 60 feet. At 12mm, the breaking load of 3,200kg is appropriate for bow and stern lines on yachts up to approximately 35 feet in moderate marina conditions. At 16mm and above, breaking loads of 6,080kg to 8,600kg cover spring and breast lines on larger cruising and motor yachts where the mooring load under surge and wind loading is significantly higher. All breaking loads are verified from English Braids’ internal datasheets. The heat-set construction maintains consistent diameter stability throughout service life, which matters for mooring lines where chafe through fairleads and on cleats is the primary wear mechanism. The reflective colourway provides high-visibility identification of mooring lines in low-light and night-time berthing conditions, which is a practical safety feature for marina environments.

Dockline is supplied on 200m reels at 12mm and 14mm for chandlers and boatyards cutting lines to length, and on 100m reels at 16mm to 20mm. For bespoke factory-spliced mooring assemblies in Dockline, see the OEM and special works service. For the full English Braids polyester rope range see the polyester rope range.
