Superyacht Dockline Polyester: Made-to-Order Mooring Rope for Large Yachts

Superyacht Dockline Polyester is a 100% polyester double braid mooring rope manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire, designed specifically for mooring line applications on superyachts and large motor yachts. The construction uses a 16-plait polyester core enclosed by a 24-plait polyester cover, with the core specified to a lower yarn density than the standard Dockline construction to produce controlled extension under mooring load and an anti-snagging surface profile appropriate for handling in port and marina environments. Extension at 50% breaking load is 13%. The torque-balanced construction eliminates kinking and hockling during handling and deployment. Superyacht Dockline Polyester is available in black as standard across eight diameters from 24mm to 52mm, all on 200m reels, and is supplied made to order. Factory-spliced eyes are available with optional leather becketting and chafe protection in polyester or leather. Bespoke lengths and custom colours are available to order. Mean breaking loads range from 12,700kg at 24mm to 52,500kg at 52mm, verified from English Braids’ internal datasheets.

Typical Applications
  • Mooring lines for superyachts and large motor yachts
  • Bow, stern and spring lines for vessels above 60 feet
  • Marina and berth mooring in high-load tidal environments
  • Factory-spliced mooring assemblies for charter and private superyacht fleets

Superyacht Dockline Polyester: Construction and Performance for Large Vessel Mooring

Superyacht Dockline Polyester is a 100% polyester double braid construction developed by English Braids specifically for the load and handling requirements of superyacht mooring applications. The 16-plait core and 24-plait cover are both polyester, but the core is specified to a lower yarn density than the standard Dockline construction, producing a rope with 13% extension at 50% breaking load. At superyacht diameter, this controlled extension is a practical advantage: mooring lines on large vessels are subject to significant surge and dynamic loading in tidal berths and exposed anchorages, and a rope with some elastic compliance absorbs peak load spikes that would otherwise be transmitted directly into cleats, fairleads and deck hardware. The torque-balanced construction eliminates the kinking and hockling tendency that occurs with non-balanced constructions when lines are repeatedly deployed and recovered during berthing operations. The anti-snagging surface profile reduces the risk of the line catching on dock furniture and fittings during handling.

English Braids manufactures Superyacht Dockline Polyester at its facility in Malvern, Worcestershire as a made-to-order product within the mooring range. It is available in eight diameters from 24mm to 52mm with mean breaking loads from 12,700kg to 52,500kg, covering the mooring line specification for vessels from 60 feet through to the largest superyacht applications. For the Dyneema SK75 alternative at equivalent or larger diameters, see the Superyacht Dockline Dyneema.

Factory-Spliced Eyes, Chafe Protection and Bespoke Mooring Assemblies

Superyacht Dockline Polyester is supplied made to order, which allows English Braids to produce factory-finished mooring assemblies to any length specification. Factory-spliced eyes produce a significantly stronger termination than a hand-spliced eye on a large diameter rope, and leather becketting around the eye provides chafe protection at the contact point on fairleads and cleats where wear is concentrated. Chafe protection is also available along the body of the line for applications where the rope runs through guides or over dock edges. Bespoke colours are available to match yacht livery or fleet identification requirements. Black is stocked as the standard colourway. For superyacht mooring assemblies requiring the lower weight and higher breaking load of a Dyneema SK75 core at equivalent or larger diameters, English Braids also produces the Superyacht Dockline Dyneema as a bespoke factory-spliced assembly with the same finishing options.
