Ebraid 3: 3-Strand Core Polyester Sheet Rope for Classic and Cruising Yacht Applications

Ebraid 3 is a classic polyester sheet rope manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire, combining a 3-strand twisted core with a 32-plait polyester cover in a tighter-pitch “one over one under one” construction. The 3-strand core gives the rope a consistently round cross-section that handles cleanly through traditional blocks, fairleads and cleats, retains its shape under compression in rope clutches and jammers, and splices easily at the end of the cover for a clean, hard-wearing termination. The 32-plait cover provides abrasion resistance and the tighter pitch significantly reduces dirt and grit ingress compared to standard braid constructions, extending the rope’s working life in conditions where sheets are regularly handled on deck. The rope is heat set and pre-stretched at the Malvern facility to relieve manufacturing stresses and reduce extension under load. Specific gravity is 1.38 for both core and cover. The rope is resistant to UV, acid and alkali degradation, with a heat resistance threshold of ~230°C in both core and cover. Available in white and beige across 8mm to 14mm.

Typical Applications
  • Classic and traditional yacht sheets and control lines
  • Cruising yacht sheets, halyards and running rigging
  • Main and headsail sheets on cruising and offshore yachts
  • General sailing control lines requiring low stretch and abrasion resistance
  • Theatre and events rigging requiring a round, flexible rope

Why a 3-Strand Core and 32-Plait Cover for Classic Yacht Sheet Rope?

Most sailing ropes use either a 3-strand twisted construction or a braided core-and-cover construction. Each has well-documented advantages and limitations for sheet applications. 3-strand rope gives a round, consistent profile that runs cleanly through traditional blocks and splices easily, but the exposed surface of the twist makes it vulnerable to abrasion at chafe points and allows grit to work into the construction under cyclic loading. Standard braided constructions resist surface abrasion well and can be produced in low-stretch specifications, but the braided profile is less consistently round under compression in rope clutches and the construction is harder to splice cleanly without specialist tools. Ebraid 3 addresses both limitations by combining a pre-stretched 3-strand core, which provides the round profile, compression stability and splicing ease, with a 32-plait polyester cover in a tighter “one over one under one” pitch. The cover protects the core from surface abrasion and closes the construction against dirt ingress. The result is a rope that handles with the tactile quality of a classic twisted rope, splices cleanly at the cover, and lasts significantly longer at chafe points than an exposed 3-strand equivalent.

English Braids manufactures Ebraid 3 at its facility in Malvern, Worcestershire. It sits within the polyester rope range as the classic sheet rope specification and is featured in the classic yacht range for traditional and heritage vessel applications.

Ebraid 3 for Classic Yacht Sheets, Cruising Running Rigging and Sailing Control Lines

In classic and cruising yacht applications, Ebraid 3 is specified as a sheet rope for main and headsails where low stretch, abrasion resistance and compatibility with traditional deck hardware are the primary requirements. The round cross-section from the pre-stretched 3-strand core passes cleanly through wooden and bronze blocks without the flat-spot tendency of some braided constructions, and the 32-plait cover resists the surface wear generated at sheet leads, fairleads and winch drums over a full sailing season. Breaking loads from English Braids’ internal datasheets: 1,900kg at 8mm, 2,990kg at 10mm, 3,880kg at 12mm and 5,380kg at 14mm, covering sheet load requirements for cruising yachts and classic vessels from small day boats through to offshore passage makers. Available in white and beige across the full 8mm to 14mm range. For halyards and luff lines on classic vessels where a hard-lay pre-stretched construction is the priority, English Braids’ 3-Strand Pre-Stretched is the appropriate alternative. For the full classic yacht rope context see the classic yacht range and the polyester rope range.
