3-Strand Matt: Spun Polyester Rope with Traditional Natural-Fibre Appearance

3-Strand Matt is a spun polyester rope manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire using modern polyester fibres laid in a traditional 3-strand construction to produce a rope with the appearance of natural hemp or jute. The spun polyester fibre gives the rope its characteristic matte, textured surface and soft hand feel, while retaining the UV resistance, rot-proof properties and longevity of synthetic polyester rather than the degradation characteristics of natural fibre rope. Extension at 50% breaking load is 7%. Specific gravity is 1.38. The rope is resistant to UV, acid and alkali degradation, with a heat resistance threshold of ~230°C. The construction is heat set during the production process and is torque balanced, giving it anti-kinking handling behaviour in use. 3-Strand Matt is available in buff and white across nine diameters from 6mm to 24mm. Note: 20mm is available in white only; 24mm is available in buff only.

Typical Applications
  • Mooring lines for leisure and classic yachts
  • Classic and traditional yacht halyards and sheets
  • Canal boat and narrowboat mooring lines
  • Hauling and lifting lines
  • Theatre and events fly systems and stage rigging
  • General utility rope for traditional-look applications

What Is 3-Strand Matt and Why Does Spun Polyester Produce a Traditional Appearance?

3-Strand Matt is constructed from spun polyester yarn rather than the smooth filament polyester used in standard braid constructions. Spun polyester is made from short fibres twisted together into a yarn with a textured, fibrous surface, which when laid into a 3-strand rope produces a matte, slightly hairy appearance that closely resembles natural hemp, sisal or jute. The buff colourway in particular is visually indistinguishable from natural hemp rope at a short distance, which is why 3-Strand Matt is specified for classic yacht rigging and traditional vessel applications where the aesthetic of the running rigging is part of the overall presentation of the boat. The white colourway with its matte surface provides the same soft-handling characteristics with a cleaner appearance suitable for mooring lines on leisure and canal vessels. Unlike natural hemp or jute, spun polyester does not rot, does not absorb water to the same degree, and does not degrade under UV exposure, giving 3-Strand Matt the service life of a synthetic rope with the visual character of a traditional one.

English Braids manufactures 3-Strand Matt at its facility in Malvern, Worcestershire. The construction is heat set during production to reduce stretch and is torque balanced to eliminate the kinking tendency of non-balanced 3-strand rope. It sits within the polyester rope range and is available across nine diameters from 6mm to 24mm. For the theatre and events application of this product, the matte buff colourway is the standard specification for period and traditional stage rigging where natural-look rope is a visual requirement within the theatres and events range.

3-Strand Matt for Mooring Lines, Classic Rigging and General Marine Use

In the mooring application, 3-Strand Matt provides a traditional-look alternative to standard braid mooring lines for classic yachts, wooden vessels, canal boats and narrowboats where a buff or natural-look mooring warp is preferred over black or navy synthetic braid. Breaking loads from English Braids’ internal datasheets: 580kg at 6mm, 1,320kg at 8mm, 1,500kg at 10mm, 2,550kg at 12mm, 3,100kg at 14mm, 3,800kg at 16mm, 4,100kg at 18mm, 4,600kg at 20mm and 5,500kg at 24mm. These figures cover the mooring line load range for leisure yachts from 20 to 50 feet and canal boats across the full diameter range. The 7% extension at 50% breaking load is consistent with standard 3-strand polyester constructions, making it appropriate for pontoon mooring where controlled extension under load is acceptable. For mooring applications requiring lower extension, English Braids’ 3-Strand Pre-Stretched is the appropriate alternative within the mooring range.

3-Strand Matt is supplied in buff across 6mm to 24mm and white across 6mm to 20mm on reels ranging from 110m to 300m depending on diameter. For the full English Braids polyester rope offering see the polyester rope range.
