12-Strand Polyester: PU Coated Dinghy Rope for Control Lines and Rigging
12-Strand Polyester is a single braid rope manufactured by English Braids in Malvern, Worcestershire from high-tenacity polyester, braided in a 12-strand construction and finished with a PU coating to increase wear resistance and longevity. The PU coating is applied at manufacture and gives the rope significantly better abrasion resistance than an uncoated polyester braid, extending service life in applications where the rope passes repeatedly through hardware, over blocks or against rough surfaces. The construction is pre-stretched and heat set to minimise constructional stretch, with extension at 50% breaking load of 6% and extension at break of 12%. Specific gravity is 1.38. The rope is resistant to UV, acid and alkali degradation, with a heat resistance threshold of ~230°C. The 12-strand construction delivers a high breaking load relative to its diameter and splices cleanly and efficiently, making it well suited to control lines, soft shackles, general rigging and applications where quick on-the-fly splicing is a practical requirement. Available in white, beige, black, silver and red across 3mm to 6mm on 200m reels.

What Is 12-Strand Polyester Rope and What Does PU Coating Do?
12-Strand Polyester is a single braid construction in which 12 polyester strands are braided together into a round, firm rope profile without a separate core and cover. The 12-strand configuration produces a higher breaking load per millimetre of diameter than an 8-plait construction at equivalent weight, making it a more efficient construction where tensile performance and compact diameter are both requirements. At 8mm, 12-Strand Polyester has a breaking load of 2,460kg against 1,000kg for the equivalent diameter 8-Plait Pre-Stretched – a useful reference point when specifying between the two constructions. The 12-strand construction also produces a rope with a naturally round, smooth surface that splices cleanly and efficiently, which is why it is the standard construction for soft shackles and applications where on-the-fly splicing adjustments need to be made quickly without specialist equipment.
The PU coating applied to the finished rope is the key differentiating feature of this construction. Polyurethane coating fills the interstices between the braided strands, smooths the surface and significantly increases abrasion resistance against hardware, rough surfaces and repeated mechanical contact. For control lines running through blocks and organisers, arborist rigging in contact with bark and branches, and any application where an uncoated braid would show accelerated wear, the PU coating extends service life materially. English Braids manufactures this construction at our Malvern facility and it sits within the polyester rope range as the high-tenacity, coated single braid option alongside the uncoated 8-Plait Pre-Stretched construction.

12-Strand Polyester for Dinghy Rigging, Control Lines and Soft Shackles
In dinghy sailing, 12-Strand Polyester is used for control lines, kicker systems, cunningham lines and general deck hardware rigging where a compact, high-tenacity polyester braid is the correct specification. The diameter range of 3mm to 8mm maps directly to the control line sizes used on single-handed and two-person dinghies, and the easy-splice construction allows lines to be made up and adjusted at the water’s edge without a splicing kit. The construction is also suited to soft shackles on dinghy blocks and attachments where a lightweight, high-load splice is preferable to a metal shackle. For dinghy-specific rope specifications across halyards, sheets and control lines, the dinghy rope range covers the full offering. For cruising yacht control line and utility rigging applications, the cruising rope range provides the full specification context.
Breaking loads verified from English Braids’ internal datasheets: 410kg at 3mm, 680kg at 4mm, 1,050kg at 5mm, 1,400kg at 6mm and 2,460kg at 8mm. All diameters are supplied on 200m reels. White and beige are available across all five diameters; black, silver and red are available from 3mm to 6mm only. The PU coating and pre-stretched construction give the rope the dimensional stability and surface durability needed for long service life in permanent outdoor rigging installations.
