HC12: 12-Strand HMPE Rope for Marine, Industrial and Agricultural Applications
HC12 is a 12-strand braided HMPE (high modulus polyethylene) rope manufactured by English Braids, polyurethane coated for enhanced abrasion resistance and protection against dirt, grit and contaminants. It delivers the high strength, low stretch and lightweight performance that make HMPE the correct specification for wire rope replacement across marine, industrial, lifting and agricultural applications.
At a specific gravity of 0.97 the rope floats, which is a practical advantage in marine deck, overboard and recovery applications where retrieval from water is a consideration. The polyurethane coating protects the HMPE fibres from abrasive wear and particulate ingress, extending service life in demanding environments including slurry scraping and winch systems where contact with abrasive material is continuous.
HC12 is available on 200m reels across the full diameter range. For cut lengths, custom reel lengths or high-volume requirements, contact the English Braids sales team to discuss your specification. The rope is spliceable to eye, grommet or endless loop terminations. It sits alongside the Steelsafe and D-Tract in the English Braids commercial HMPE range. For the full Dyneema® and HMPE rope range see the category page.

HMPE Rope Construction: Why 12-Strand Braided with Polyurethane Coating?
HMPE (high modulus polyethylene) fibre offers a tensile strength-to-weight ratio that significantly exceeds steel wire at equivalent diameter. A 12-strand braided construction distributes load evenly across all strands, produces a round, torque-balanced profile that runs cleanly through blocks, sheaves and winch drums without twisting or kinking, and presents the maximum possible fibre surface for load-bearing relative to the rope diameter.
The polyurethane coating on HC12 serves a specific function: protecting the HMPE fibre bundle from abrasive particulate wear. In slurry scraping, agricultural and industrial environments, the rope surface is in constant contact with abrasive material. HMPE fibres are inherently strong but susceptible to surface wear under sustained abrasive contact. The polyurethane coating provides a sacrificial outer layer that protects the structural fibre below, extending service life in conditions that would degrade an uncoated rope significantly faster.
The specific gravity of 0.97 means HC12 floats in fresh and salt water, which has direct operational value in marine deck and overboard applications. Combined with its low stretch characteristics, the rope maintains consistent working length under load, which is a critical requirement in winching, crane sling and recovery applications where load positioning must be predictable. HC12, D-Tract and Steelsafe: Selecting the Right HMPE Rope for Industrial and Marine Applications
English Braids offers three HMPE ropes for commercial, industrial and marine applications. Each is a 12-strand HMPE construction, but they differ in coating, surface finish and the application environments they are optimised for.
- HC12: polyurethane coated 12-strand HMPE. Optimised for abrasion-intensive environments including slurry scraping, agricultural winching and industrial load handling. Floats. Available 3-48mm on 200m reels, cut lengths to order.
- D-Tract: 12-strand HMPE for marine and industrial wire rope replacement. Contact the sales team for specification details.
- Steelsafe: HMPE construction designed for wire rope replacement in lifting and rigging applications. Contact the sales team for specification details.
For applications where the rope may be exposed to elevated temperatures, HMPE is not the correct fibre. Permanent strength loss occurs above 80°C. For high-temperature applications, the English Braids aramid or Technora® range provides the correct thermal performance. For slurry scraping and agricultural winch applications specifically, HC12 is engineered to deliver the surface protection, acid resistance and extended service life that make it a direct replacement for steel wire in those environments, without the wire splinter risk that makes steel hazardous in proximity to livestock.
