Rope Solutions for Seismic Survey Operations
Seismic surveying plays a critical role in the exploration of subsurface oil and gas reserves. In shallow water seismic projects, hundreds of sensors are deployed across large seabed areas to collect detailed geophysical data, helping to map subsurface formations for future drilling operations.
When a leading seismic survey company required a tailored rope solution for a major offshore project, English Braids were approached directly to deliver a solution that could meet both the technical and logistical demands of this highly specialised operation.
The Challenge
The customer required a rope assembly system capable of managing the deployment of thousands of seismic sensors across extensive shallow water zones, while ensuring:
- High precision node spacing
- Reliable underwater performance
- Fast and efficient deployment and recovery
- Robust strength and long-term durability in marine conditions
- Large-scale production capacity on a short lead time
The project specifications included:
- 300 mainline assemblies, each 550 metres in length using 12mm rope
- Sewn loops positioned every 50 metres along the mainlines for node attachment
- 3000 short connecting ropes (approx. 1m circumference) to attach sensors
The Rope Solution
English Braids developed a fully customised solution using the Eurobraid product line:
Main Deployment Lines
- 12mm Eurobraid rope
- Sewn loops professionally installed every 50m for node positioning
- Designed for long-line deployment, strength, and controlled handling during vessel operations
Attachment Lines
- 8mm Eurobraid rope, cut to precise lengths and sewn into loops
- Sensors secured via cow hitch to the mainline loops
- Carabiners used for fast connection and disconnection
This system enabled quick deployment of sensors at precise intervals, allowing survey teams to operate efficiently in the field while ensuring accurate grid placement on the seabed.
The Outcome
Over a 3-month period, English Braids successfully manufactured the full order to specification, with production support provided by Ibex Marina Ropes, part of the English Braids Group of companies. The collaborative project demonstrated English Braids’ ability to provide:
