Innovative Hydropower Sediment Management Powered by Dyneema® Rope Solutions
Sedimentation is a growing challenge for hydropower plants across the world. As rivers carry natural sediments downstream, these materials settle within reservoirs, obstructing intake valves, safety gates, and drainage systems. Over time, this reduces water storage capacity, limits energy generation, and creates major maintenance challenges.
While traditional sediment removal methods—such as dredging or flushing—are often costly, invasive, and disruptive to ecosystems, new automated sediment management technologies are offering operators a more efficient solution. At the heart of these innovations are high-performance rope systems built with Dyneema® fibre.
Fully Automated Sediment Removal Systems
The sediment management solution deployed in these hydropower installations operates entirely automatically. Using a modular suction platform, the system collects and processes sediment continuously, without the need for manual intervention or heavy mechanical equipment.
The system includes:
- A floating suction platform anchored to the shoreline.
- A sediment suction head located on the reservoir floor.
- A drum screen that separates coarse and fine sediments. Larger particles are safely returned to the lakebed, while finer materials are transported through the plant’s turbines and discharged back to the river.
- An advanced control system with full remote monitoring capability.
One of the most advanced aspects of the system is its positioning technology. The suction platform and sediment head are moved and stabilised using cable winches — allowing highly accurate positioning even in deep reservoirs and surge chambers. This positioning system is, according to project research, a world-first in sediment management for hydropower.
The Importance of Dyneema® Rope in Hydropower Operations
Precise and reliable winch control is essential for the system’s operation, and that’s where English Braids’ high-performance Dyneema® ropes play a critical role.
Two advanced Dyneema® rope products were selected for the project:
- Dynamic Dyneema® Rope
- Dtract Dyneema® Rope (Dyneema SK75)
Both ropes offer the key performance characteristics required for long-term submerged use:
- Exceptional strength-to-weight ratio: Dyneema® ropes are significantly lighter than steel wire alternatives, reducing winch loads and improving system efficiency.
- Minimal stretch: Essential for accurate positioning of the suction platform and head during operation.
- Outstanding abrasion resistance: Protects against wear from constant movement and underwater contact.
- Excellent water resistance: Dyneema® fibre does not absorb water, preventing swelling or degradation over time.
- Long service life: Ensuring consistent performance in harsh environments with minimal maintenance.
With the help of English Braids Dyneema® ropes, the system operates with maximum precision, minimal downtime, and reduced environmental impact — delivering a highly efficient sediment management solution for hydropower operators.
Proven Results Across Multiple Hydropower Facilities
This Dyneema® rope-powered system is now deployed across a variety of hydropower applications, including:
- Reservoirs
- Run-of-the-river power plants
- Pumped storage facilities
