Shock Cord: Natural Rubber Core Elastic Bungee Cord for Marine and General Use

English Braids Shock Cord is manufactured in Malvern, Worcestershire using a first-quality multi-stranded natural rubber core that delivers a minimum of 100% elongation under load with consistent recovery. The standard construction uses a polypropylene cover over the rubber core, with single-cover and composite double-cover configurations available. Alternative sheathing materials including polyester, nylon, cotton and Nomex are available to specification. British Standard shock cord is manufactured with a rot-proof cotton or Nomex outer sheath to BS 3F70 and BS 3F71, both high-specification aerospace standards for defence and aviation applications. English Braids also supplies a large number of NSN assemblies to defence and aviation sectors. For leisure marine use, the standard polypropylene cover construction is stocked in five colourways (white, red, blue, yellow and black) across eight diameters from 3mm to 12mm, all on 100m reels. Note: 3mm is available in white and black only; 7mm and 10mm to 12mm are available in white only or limited colourways.

Typical Applications
  • Dinghy bungee and batten retention systems
  • Dinghy traveller and self-bailer systems
  • Leisure marine deck bungee and lashing
  • Equestrian equipment and rugs
  • Agricultural securing and bundling
  • Automotive and transportation tie-downs
  • Defence and aerospace assemblies to BS 3F70 and BS 3F71

What Is English Braids Shock Cord and How Is It Constructed?

Shock Cord is an elastic cord construction in which a multi-stranded natural rubber core is enclosed within a braided sheath. The rubber core provides the elasticity: under load, the core elongates and returns to its original length on release. English Braids’ Shock Cord uses first-quality multi-stranded natural rubber that delivers a minimum of 100% elongation, meaning the cord will stretch to at least twice its resting length before reaching its elastic limit, then recover fully. The polypropylene cover protects the rubber core from abrasion, UV exposure and general handling wear, extending service life in outdoor marine and industrial environments. The cover carries the cord’s UV, acid and alkali resistance; the rubber core itself does not have significant chemical or UV resistance, which is why cover quality and material selection matter for outdoor and marine applications. English Braids manufactures Shock Cord at its Malvern facility and offers single-cover and composite double-cover constructions, with sheathing options across polypropylene, polyester, nylon, cotton and Nomex to suit different application requirements and specifications.

For defence and aviation applications, English Braids manufactures British Standard shock cord with rot-proof cotton or Nomex outer sheaths to BS 3F70 and BS 3F71, both high-specification aerospace standards. English Braids also supplies a range of NSN assemblies for defence procurement. The standard polypropylene cover range sits within the polypropylene rope range and is available from stock in five colourways across eight diameters from 3mm to 12mm.

Shock Cord Applications: Leisure Marine, Dinghy, Equestrian and Defence

In leisure marine applications, shock cord is used for bungee and batten retention systems on dinghies and cruising yachts, traveller systems, self-bailer bungees, deck lashing and hatch retainers where a controlled elastic return force is needed. On dinghies in particular, small-diameter shock cord from 3mm to 6mm is used extensively for batten pockets, cunningham bungees and self-bailer retaining loops where the cord must return to its resting length reliably after each deployment. For leisure marine and dinghy applications, see the dinghy rope range for the full specification context. Beyond marine use, shock cord is specified for equestrian rug and blanket securing, agricultural bundling and transportation tie-downs across 4mm to 12mm diameters where high-cycle elastic performance and outdoor durability are the requirements.

The standard polypropylene cover construction is stocked in white, red, blue, yellow and black across 3mm to 12mm, all on 100m reels. 3mm is available in white and black only; 7mm in white only; 8mm in white, blue and yellow; 10mm and 12mm in white and black only.
